Benjamin Hawkins

President George Washington appointed Benjamin Hawkins “Principal Temporary Agent for Indian Affairs South of the Ohio River” in 1796, a position he held until his death in 1816. Although Hawkins was agent to all Indians in the South, he chose to live among the Creek Indians at an Indian Agency that he built on the Flint River in what is now Crawford County.

James Brown Statue

This life-size bronze statue of the Hardest Working Man in Show Business stands at James Brown Plaza on Broad Street at the north end of the Augusta Common.

The statue depicts Augusta native James Brown mid-career and captures him as so many remember seeing him on stage. It also honors Mr. Brown for his many musical achievements, including 1983 Georgia Music Hall of Fame Inductee, 1986 Rock’n‘Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, and 2003 Kennedy Center Honoree.
