Located in Westcliffe, Colorado at an elevation of 7,888 feet just east of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Bear Basin Packtrips and Outfitting provides guests with western outdoor adventures that include horseback riding, Colorado horse pack trips, fly fishing, and elk hunting. The natural areas that Bear Basin ventures in include the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Great Sand Dunes National Park, and the Wet Mountains. The outfitter provides all meals, tents, horses and saddles. You may begin your experience by learning how to saddle a horse. Bear Basin Ranch sits on 3,500 acres of undeveloped Colorado Landscape. Some of the buildings on the ranch are over 100 years old.

Day Rides

The outfitter offers full day rides on Bear Basin Ranch with lunch provided. Half-day rides and sunset dinner rides are about 2 hours of riding time.

Weekend and Three-Day Colorado Horse Pack Trips

Weekend and Three-Day Pack Trips are planned for beginning horseback riders or for individuals who have had a small amount of horseback riding and climbing experience. Spend nights in one-or-two-person expedition tents. All meals are provided by Bear Basin. Specific Weekend and Three-Day Trips include the “Great Weekend Escape,” “Cowboy Weekend,” “Three-Day ‘Classic’ Pack Trip,” “Three-Day Fishing Trip,” “Two 1/2-Day ‘Saddle and Paddle’ Rafting and Riding Trip,” and the “Crestones’ Climber.”

Five Day Adventure Trips

Saddle your own horse and learn to care for it on these Colorado horse pack trips. Learn mountain riding skills as you progress along the trail. Ride steep sand dune trails. See the largest sand dunes in the western hemisphere. Ride past western ghost towns. Experience mountain creeks and waterfalls on these Colorado horseback riding trails. Venues for 5-day adventure trips include the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness, Great Sand Dunes National Park, and Bear Basin Ranch.

Hunting Expeditions

The outfitter has had an elk hunting permit from the U.S. Forest Service since 1972. Hunting camps are limited to small groups. Each camp is hunted only once a year. Experienced guides are knowledgeable in the habits of the animals. They know Colorado horse pack trips and hunting skills and impart their savvy to guests. Hunters experience Colorado backcountry in sometimes harsh weather.

Fly Fishing in the Sangre de Christo Range

Fly fish rivers and stream of the Sangre de Christo Mountain Range and the Colorado Rockies on one day or multi-day guided fly fishing trips.

Peak Climbs

Climb two of Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks, Crestone Peak and Crestone Needle. The outfitter provides the gear needed and climbing expertise where required. Views of San Louis Valley, Wet Valley and the range of Sangre de Cristo mountains.
