Description:
The bluff above the Altamaha River on which Fort King George is located has had a rich history that includes Indian settlements, a Spanish mission and an English fort established here in 1721 before the settlement of Savannah by Oglethorpe. The bluff was also the site of extensive sawmill operations during the glory days of Darien’s lumber economy. The English fort, including moat palisades, earthworks and blockhouse, has been reconstructed from detailed accounts of the buildings typical of British frontier forts of the 1700s. The site has an attractive and informative museum as well as self-guided walking tours.
Fort King George staff conducts a limited number of interpretive canoe trips in the spring and fall on the Altamaha. Fall trips go from Altamaha Park downriver to Fort King George, or overnight on Lewis Island, the site of the largest stand of virgin cypress in North America. Also available is a 2-mile introductory trip from Cathead Creek to Darien or Fort King George depending on weather and river conditions. Paddlers see hardwood swamp, cypress trees, wildflowers and wildlife and learn about the history of the region
