Description:
The site traces the 12,000-year history of the area’s Native American heritage, from Ice Age hunters to Creek.
Temple mounds remain from a village built A.D. 900-1150 near the Ocmulgee River. The monument consists of two units separated by two miles of riverine wetlands along the Ocmulgee. L-Mounds and Village Unit can be visited by special permit.
An 800 ft. boardwalk lets you visit the emergent wetlands at Ocmulgee National Monument. This 10 year old wetlands was created as a result of a massive flood in July 1994. The changes in the landscape from hardwood forest to emergent wetlands is an example of natures sucessional cycles.
