Sparta’s Cherry Hill Hunting

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009
Georgia > East Central Region > Hancock County > Sparta

cherrygarrgb360.jpgWhether it is quail hunting during the day or bowfishing at night, we at Cherry Hill Hunting Preserve believe in giving you a quality hunt that will both challenge and excite you. Our quail hunting in Georgia is as close to wild bird hunting as you can get and yet be assured you have quail to hunt. Our Bowfishing Charters are an adventure just to be on the water at night. You never know what you’ll see! We book a few deer and turkey hunts, but only if we think you’ll have a good shot at being successful. Hog hunts are free with the purchase of any other hunt. A sporting clay course is also available free with your hunt. PHOTO above is a happy Cherry Hill Hunting Preserve client with a 18-pound gar taken during a nighttime bowfishing expedition on the Savannah River.

Bowfishing
cherrybowfishingrgb190.jpgShooting fish can be like a hot dove shoot with no bag limit. The first time I take you, we’ll shoot the Savannah River where the shooting is fast and furious. Just like every dove is flying at a different height and speed, every fish is swimming at a different depth and angle. There is a deflection of light that makes the fish look higher than they really are. By shooting low, the splash of the arrow does not distort your view of the fish. Your arrow looks like a torpedo sailing through the water toward it’s target. In the river, most of the fish you’ll see are 2-4 lb suckers, there are only a few trophy fish. But, since you’ll have the opportunity to shoot literally 1000 times apiece during a full nights charter, it doesn’t take long to get the hang of it. After you get used to aiming low, we’ll go to the lake where you’ll only shoot a few hundred times in a night, but you stand a better chance of seeing a 10-15 lb gar, a 20-30 lb carp, or a 50+ lb catfish. Besides shooting fish, it is an adventure just being on the water at night. You’ll see beaver, turtles, gators. It’s also interesting to see what lies under water. I’ve found everything from a safe to a satellite dish. My prices are the same for 1 to 3 people. All gear will be provided. River North Fly Fishing

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009
Georgia > Northeast Region > Habersham County> Clarkesville

rivernorthrgb400.jpgRiver North owner Eddie Michael coaches Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith on sport of fly fishing on the Soque River in Northeast Georgia. Photo by Jason Getz, AJC. See more photos of the Michael - Smith fly fishing trip and order prints.

We would like to introduce you to some of North Georgia’s best fast water, deep hole fly fishing.
Experience BIG rainbow, brown and brook trout in a pristine mountain setting of private waters.
The waters have been managed for five years and open for fishing since March of 1999.
Let us invite the discriminating angler for a unique day of fly fishing at River North Fly Fishing. Located 1 mile off Highway 197 north of Clarkesville, GA in the “foothills” of the Blue Ridge Mountain Range.

Contact us today to book your exceptional day of fly fishing.

Eddie Michael has a simple recipe for trophy trout. “They’re a lot like cattle,” the Clarkesville, Ga., outfitter said. “As long as there’s grass in the pasture, they’ll stay. “Although the comparison was in jest, the fish are truly big. But they don’t get that way by accident. Michael owns a mile of fertile bottomland along the Soque River, where he manages one of north Georgia’s growing number of private catch-and-release trout programs. “We got rainbows, browns, even some native trout, ” he said, whipping a limber 5-weight like a sorcerer swishing a magic wand….

Who was Charlie Elliott?
Charles Newton Elliott (1906-2000) lived in Covington, Georgia, and served as the first Director of Georgia State Parks in 1937-38. He became the Commissioner of Natural Resources in 1938-41, then was the first Director of the Game and Fish Commission (now known as the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division) in 1943-49. Elliott also was Southeastern Field Editor for Outdoor Life magazine from 1950 until his passing. His dedication to the conservation of the natural world and wildlife was evident to those who knew him personally and those who read his many writings.

Whatever your reason for being there, the outdoors is a world apart, a creation unique with its own colors, its special music, and its matchless variety of fragrance. No human paint brush could ever duplicate its beauty, no musical instrument its blended symphonies, and there is no way to match its fragrance with chemicals. Charlie Elliott

Lake Lanier’s Tom Mann Fishing Guide

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009
Georgia > Atlanta Metro Region > Gwinnett County > Buford

When you book a Lake Lanier fishing trip with Tom Mann, Jr. (below) you are not booking a trip with tommannlrgb-224.jpgjust any guide; you will be on the water with one of this country’s top professional fishermen with over 20 years on the tournament trail and also over 30 years of fishing on Lake Lanier. I am a professional in every way, so you don’t have to worry about putting your best customer, child, father or best friend in my boat for a fantastic day of fishing. We will customize any trip.

We will be fishing out of the same boat I fish all my tournaments which is the absolute best you can fish in. It is a 2009 Z520 Ranger with a 250 HP Evinrude E-tec and the electronics provided by Raymarine. The equipment will all be top of the line rods and reels from Pflueger and All-Star Rods that I use in tournaments.

I will furnish everything you will need as far as equipment and tackle. You will need to bring rain gear if needed and a coat or jacket for those cold starts. I will furnish ice and cooler; you will need to bring your drinks and food if desired.

On full day trips there are several great restaurants on the lake where we can stop and eat a great lunch which breaks up the day. Of course, this would be completely up to you.

Some other things you may want to consider bringing are sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, and a camera.

St. Simons Outfitters

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009
Georgia > Coast > Glynn > St. Simons Island

stsimonsoutfitters.jpgSt. Simons Outfitters on St. Simons Island was awarded the prestigious “Orvis Guide Service of the Year” for 2006. All guides are USCG licensed Captains.

This western most point on the Eastern Seaboard has a significant tidal flow, which greatly influences the character of local islands, bars and channels. A pristine location often thought of as a golfing Mecca is actually one of the best fishing areas on the coast. It is an area we know intimately and one that we continually work to protect. Fortunately, this “unknown treasure” is neither crowded nor over-fished. Another fact not known to many is the great variety of fish in the Golden Isles. In fact, at times there are more species of fish in this area than any other area on the East Coast.

We have had the pleasure of outfitting the fly fisherman for over 40 years. Some of our customers are world record holders. Topping the list are the records for the elusive Atlantic salmon. Three of the records set in 1983 are still standing. The 2 lb leader for the 28 lb Salmon was unique as was the 4 lb leader record for the 38 lbs 8 oz Salmon.

We welcome the opportunity to be your outfitter or to guide you on your next fly-fishing trip to the waters off the Golden Isles of Georgia.
