Hardware Ranch was purchased by the State of Utah in 1945 in an effort to establish and operate a winter feeding program for Rocky Mountain Elk that were being pushed out of Cache Valley natural feeding grounds by land development. Hardware Ranch Wilderness Management Area has served as a center for elk research ever since. Today, the center also provides visitors with an up-close opportunity to view and learn about wildlife. Elk viewing rides are available Fridays through Sundays December to March. Rivers and streams on the property are open for trout fishing year-round.
