Table Talk

Monday, March 30th, 2009

restaurantillustrationrgb600.jpgA Georgia and Atlanta restaurant and food blog left off the list last week was “Table Talk” by Meridith Ford Goldman, the food writer at the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Recent topics include:

  • Shopping for cheese at Star Provisions, which she considers to be among the best cheese shops in the Southeast
  • A report on a visit to the Chocolate Bar in Decatur
  • And a two-part post on whether or not it’s okay for a restaurant to kick you out.

Table Talk is now on my 1st Person blog roll, and I’ll be a frequent visitor.

Georgia and (Mostly) Atlanta Restaurant Blogs

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

diningout-copy.jpgHere’s a summary of Georgia and (mostly) Atlanta restaurant and food blogs. Everybody sees it differently, and you’ll want to click through the list yourself to find a blogger or two that shares your tastes and point of view. George Bernard Shaw said, “There is no love sincerer than the love of food,” and here’s the proof.

Do you have a favorite Georgia restaurant or food blog that we’ve missed? I’d like to hear about it and pass it along to others.

AMY ON FOOD  Specializes in Atlanta restaurants, cooking and baking. Amy is an in-town foodie who earns her lunch money as an adoption attorney. She is enthusiastic about sharing her dining adventures with others who appreciate a good meal.

ATLANTA ETC.: WAYNE WOLF’S FOOD AND RESTAURANT BLOG is a food and restaurant blog about Atlanta’s food scene “with occasional forays into the world beyond.” Wayne is a professor at Georgia Tech in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and may be the world expert on lunchtime dining around the Georgia Tech and Emory Campuses. Recent posts include: West Egg Café, Bottoms Up and 5th Street Ribs ‘n Blues. Atlanta etc.: Wayne Wolf’s Food and Restaurant Blog.

BLISSFUL GLUTTON  Brazilian-born, Emory university graduate Jennifer Zyman’s blog includes reviews, plus news about food events and some recipes. Her food photos are close-up and appetizing, and she relies on those as much or more than she does on words to get across her ideas about the food and ambiance of a particular restaurant. She pretty much sticks to Atlanta restaurants and has a preference for the Asian restaurants in the Buford Highway corridor.

COVERED DISH is a dining blog from the editors of Atlanta Magazine. A good source of news about Atlanta restaurants.

FOOD AND MORE  Long-time Atlanta Journal-Constitution food writer John Kessler has added his voice to the chorus of Atlanta food bloggers. Kessler has been a writer at the AJC since 1997. For the first seven years, he worked as the paper’s dining critic. Currently, he writes the Sunday “Restaurant Stories” column, plus food feature and news stories in addition to his blog. Read this thoughtful writer’s “Food and More” reporting and musings on the Atlanta food scene.

FOODIEBUDDHA.COM covers metro Atlanta restaurants, chefs, food, cooking and happenings in the larger world of food with an insider’s eclectic, scatter-shot, gossipy tone. See his many tags for some idea of the range of the Buddha’s interests.

GEORGIA RESTAURANT ASSOCIATION BLOG. No restaurant reviews, but this new blog has the potential to be an interesting behind-the-scenes look at the Georgia restaurant industry.

OMNIVORE ATLANTA  is the food blog of the weekly free, at-one-time alternative newspaper, Creative Loafing. It’s dedicated to the discussion of food, restaurants and life, and the intersection of food and culture. Cliff Bostock and Besha Rodell use the blog to deliver thoughts and musings on the Atlanta scene, the national scene, and the role food plays in our lives.

SAVANNAHFOODIE.COM News and reviews about restaurants and food-related topics on the Coastal Georgia travel region.

STEAKHEAD’S  is an “Atlanta eats” blog by an anonymous blogger who characterizes himself as follows: “They say a Steakhead is a refined meathead. Well, maybe that’s not entirely me, but let’s just say you’ll have a better chance of seeing me if you are a season-ticket holder to the Thrashers or Falcons, than if you were a season-ticket holder to the Opera. But when it comes to food, I most definitely am Steakhead. I am not a refined food critic. I rarely eat French. I don’t do Fois Gras. I have had my last Vegan meal.” Heaven to Steakhead’s is a medium-rare, 10-oz. filet from the Chops Lobster Bar with a side of lobster tail.

UNOFFICIAL ATLANTA FOOD CRITIC  The sub-title of the blog is “The truth from someone who pays for their meals and not someone who gets fawned on regularly because they work for a magazine.”

Georgia’s Five-Star Restaurants

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

The Mobil Travel Guide for the Coastal Southeast gives their exclusive Five-Star ranking to two Georgia restaurants, the Dining Room at the Buckhead Ritz Carlton hotel and the Georgian Room inside the Cloister at Sea Island. Here is the Guide’s description of the dining experience at the Dining Room

  • diningroom.jpgPrepare for an extraordinary experience when dining in the masterful hands of chef Arnaud Berthelier, who creates menus influenced by the lively flavors of France, Spain and Northern Africa. Dishes served in the classically elegant room (think deep, tufted banquettes, cloaked in Victorian green silk) include sweetbread kebobs with tomato confit, logster and citrus cocotte or truffle-stuffed guinea hen. After dessert and a cheese course, sample the petie fours, which arrive in numbers.

And the Georgian Room

  • georgianroomrgb400.jpgThe magnificent Georgia Room is tucked inside the Cloister. The decor is stunningly grand with bas-relief details, guilded chandeliers and a carved stone fireplace. Tables are set with crisp white linens, hand-painted china and silver flatware. Dishes highlight seasonal, fresh ingredients and might include butter-poached sea bass with frog’s leg confit and herb dumblings or succulent kobe beef filet with smoked morel mushrooms. Vegetarian dishes are available. Staff is polished and attentive. A gorgeous private dining room for up to 10 guests makes special events even more memorable.

A Mobile Five-Star restaurant offers one of the few flawless dining experiences in the country. These establishments consistently provide their guests with exceptional food, superlative service, elegant décor, and exquisite presentation of each detail surrounding a meal.

The Mobile Travel Guide awards five stars to just 20 U.S. restaurants.

Atlanta’s Finest Dining

atlantasfinestdining.jpgAtlanta’s Finest Dining, subtitled “A Review of Atlanta’s Finest Restaurants, Chefs and Culinary Happenings,” is one of the most readable and informative sources about dining out in Atlanta. Plus, publisher/editor-in-chief miles Neiman and his contributing writers venture out into other Georgia travel regions from time to time to report on restaurants from the mountains to the coast.

The Farmhouse at Serenbe

Monday, March 9th, 2009

serenbe.jpgThe Serenbe community and its acclaimed restaurant, the Farmhouse, was the subject of a recent New York Times story by writer Kevin Sack.

Sack characterized the Farmhouse this way: “Since opening in Palmetto, Ga., in June 2006, the Farmhouse has become a Southeastern showcase for the country’s growing farm-to-table movement, winning accolades for food that is both innovative and authentic. Dining at one of the Farmhouse’s 10 or so tables is an almost worshipful experience. Soft string music sets the mood, and guests await the next course in cheerful whispers. Our outstanding prix fixe meal, which came with wines paired to each course, started with charred lamb carpaccio and a melt-in-your-mouth gnocchi made with spinach and shrimp, followed by entrees of molasses-lacquered short ribs served over creamed grits and wild Georgia shrimp surrounded by braised fennel, celery, pearl onions and artichokes.”

The Bar at Trois

Friday, March 6th, 2009

trois.jpgRunning parallel to 14th Street in the heart of Atlanta’s hip Midtown, the bar at Trois is a sophisticated living room setting with an aluminum floor. Mixologists assemble handcrafted cocktails with fresh ingredients to resurrect old classics and invent new ones. The bar at Trois was named one of the Best Bars in America in the June 2007 issue of Esquire Magazine.

Here Trois’s recipe for the classic Georgia Mint Julep:
2½ oz peach-infused brandy
¾ oz simple syrup
3 mint sprigs
Peach slice
Lightly bruise the leaves from two springs of mint in the simple syrup in a short metal cup. Add brandy; fill 2/3 with crushed ice. Stir to chill; the outside of the cup should frost over. Add more crushed ice on top to overflowing. Garnish with a mint sprig and a peach slice.
