What Bennie’s Red Barn Says About Itself…
Welcome to Bennie’s Red Barn. We are the oldest privately owned restaurant on bennies1insidergb500.jpgSaint Simon’s Island. Nestled between beautiful live oaks, Bennie’s has been a favorite of locals and tourists since 1955. No visit to the Golden Isles is complete without a visit to Bennie’s. At the Red Barn, you can enjoy steaks grilled to perfection over an old-fashioned open oak flame, seafood, chicken or spaghetti in a classic setting. We have a private dining room available and would love to host your rehearsal dinner, family reunion, conference, or golf group for a dining experience you will never forget.

What Others Are Saying About Bennie’s

  • Rated number 3 on the list of “Best in St. Simons Island.” Urban Spoon
  • Though there’s room for 200 people, it feels just like family with the checkered tablecloths and the big open fireplace. There’s also fresh local seafood. Fodors

What The Smith House is Saying About Itself…
If you have never enjoyed the unique experience of sitting down to a Smith House simthinsidergb384.jpgtable, you simply just do not know what you have missed. It is a “seeing is believing” experience. It is like taking a step back in time to an era of the friendly boarding house and the small mountain inn with the large family style dining table.

Platters piled high with Smith House style fried chicken and sweet baked ham, with roast beef; fried okra, candied yams and a dozen or so different fresh, steamed vegetables; homemade yeast rolls and corn muffins that melt in your mouth…this is the kind of old fashioned home cooking that has made The Smith House a favorite for folks from all over the country. We use only low-cholesterol oil, so you can feel comfortable eating as much as you want of whatever you like. No need for reservations unless your group has 20 or more.

What Others Are Saying About The Smith House

  • Ate in the dining room during lunch. Meals are “family style”. Serving dishes are brought to the large table and passed around by diners. Wonderful selection of deliciously prepared southern standards. oimtess, Spokane, WA in TripAdvisor
  • The Smith House is an elbow-to-elbow eatfest. Tables are communal, shared by local folks and visitors, who all behave as though they were at a family party, passing platters back and forth, chattering happily about the delicious food. Count on fried chicken, supplemented by Brunswick stew or catfish and hushpuppies. Review in Roadfood with a “Top Pick” rating
  • It used to be considered second best to its competitor at Rabun Gap, but their exceptional  service  and delicious  food  has everyone saying that the Smith House is the top dog. Susiebell2 in BooRah

Athens’ Grit

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

gritcrownrgb498.jpgThe Grit has been an old favorite in Athens for more than two decades. It serves vegetarian food in a way that appeals to ALL kinds of eaters. The lure of delicious homemade food served in generous portions at inexpensive prices, coupled with a lovingly restored pair of handsome dining rooms in a splendid historic building…it all brings people back and back again.

What They’re Saying About The Grit

  • I make Tofu Rubens at home, and am kind of known for them. The Grit’s put mine to shame.  It was tasty and wonderful. The sweet potato fries were the best I’ve ever had. They were light, crispy, and just the right amount of spicy.  H.A from San Francisco in Yelp.
  • We had the opportunity to eat here twice in 2 days while visiting Athens. Lunch the first day was a success–the grilled cheese and spinach was very good as was the golden bowl and the Med Platter. A few nights later we went for dessert and it was less satisfying. dbrown46, Vienna, VA in Trip Advisor.
  • The Grit is the best restaurant in Athens, hands-down! They have a wide-ranging menu, and all my non-vegetarian friends love it! They also have the best staff ever! By cmaumu1 in Yahoo! Travel

  • Very good service. Wide array of Tapas. Had a great time and would definitely go back again. Contributor comment on Yahoo Travel
  • I’ve been frequenting The Bee’s Knees for about four years now. A few years ago, I introduced a group of non-locals to the restaurant. They were suitably impressed and kept coming back to the restaurant throughout the week because they enjoyed it so much. What I like the most about the Bee’s Knees is the intimacy. Reader review in Trip Advisor

The name, “The Bee’s Knees,” itself has it’s own curious meaning. Taken from 1920’s jazz influenced slang, it refers to the “hip” or the “cool” thing such as “The Cat’s Meow”.
