Barbecue Qualifications

Saturday, October 31st, 2009
By MARK JOHNSON, Restaurant Editor

mark.jpgBefore you even THINK about eating its meat, a REAL barbecue restaurant has to show its certifieds.

It has to have at least one hand-lettered sign and one framed picture of a pig.

Smyrna’s Old South Barbecue meets both those qualifications and a great many more.

Brown’s Guides is always searching for Georgia’s “certified” best barbecue restaurants and would like to hear about your choices.

Tell me your recommendations on the best barbecue restaurants in Georgia, and I’ll pass them along to other Brown’s Guides website visitors.

  • If a barbecue restaurant doesn’t have at least one hand-lettered sign and one framed picture of a pig, it should be avoided. Old South has both in abundance, which means it knows how to smoke. Mark Johnson, Restaurant Editor, Browns Guides.
  • This is probably the best BBQ restaurant I have ever eaten at. The barbeque is great and the Brunswick stew is second to none. It has a traditional Southern atmosphere and is reasonably priced. Matt z on Yahoo! 2/2008.
