sprayberrysrgb761.jpgFour generations of Sprayberrys have continued the Sprayberry’s tradition with almost 80 years of service to travelers, businessmen and women, and locals. Politicians from U.S. Presidents to Governors have campaigned at Sprayberry’s, and entertainers and athletes stop for barbecue when traveling nearby. “Regular” customers include sports fans making their way between Athens, Atlanta, and Auburn. Others visit as they travel to and from the beach. Holidays bring families who have made a meal at Sprayberry’s part of their family tradition.

Barbecue Qualifications

Saturday, October 31st, 2009
By MARK JOHNSON, Restaurant Editor

mark.jpgBefore you even THINK about eating its meat, a REAL barbecue restaurant has to show its certifieds.

It has to have at least one hand-lettered sign and one framed picture of a pig.

Smyrna’s Old South Barbecue meets both those qualifications and a great many more.

Brown’s Guides is always searching for Georgia’s “certified” best barbecue restaurants and would like to hear about your choices.

Tell me your recommendations on the best barbecue restaurants in Georgia, and I’ll pass them along to other Brown’s Guides website visitors.

And read more about Smyrna’s Old South Barbecue.

  • If a barbecue restaurant doesn’t have at least one hand-lettered sign and one framed picture of a pig, it should be avoided. Old South has both in abundance, which means it knows how to smoke. Mark Johnson, Restaurant Editor, Browns Guides.
  • This is probably the best BBQ restaurant I have ever eaten at. The barbeque is great and the Brunswick stew is second to none. It has a traditional Southern atmosphere and is reasonably priced. Matt z on Yahoo! 2/2008.
  • The food is great!!! It’s some of the best!!! Radarlarry on CitySearch 7/2006.

What Swallow at the Hollow Says About Itself…
swallowrgb395.jpgThe Swallow at the Hollow is a Barbecue Restaurant / Country Music Venue where the philosophy is that “If you can make it homemade, you do make it homemade.”   And that holds true with everything, from any one of our delicious Hickory smoked meats, homemade sausage, homemade macaroni and cheese, homemade bread and butter pickles, homemade sauces on the tables to our yummy homemade chocolate chip banana pudding, buttermilk biscuits and loaf of bread.

What Others Are Saying About Swallow at the Hollow...

  • My wife and I had a great time here on our first visit. My mac & cheese and potato salad was wonderful. I was able to have a split plate of sliced beef and sausage, which was also good. Add on the homemade biscuits, and you have yourself a winner! Stuart Hartley
  • Don’t be put off if you aren’t a fan of country or picnic bench seating. This kuntry-kitschy kitchen serves up some of the best BBQ you’ll ever swallow! The ribs are fall-off-the-bone fantastic. Just count your fingers after licking them off. Great mac-n-cheese and potato salad too. Portions are very generous, so be hungry when you arrive. Service was fast and friendly. Really charming to eat on the porch under the big tree when it rains. Steve Perry
  • A must eat restaurant. One of the best BBQ places in the south. Great entertainment on the weekends. merlen jensen
  • Barbecue in a place that looks like a Cue Joint. The Mac-N-Cheese is also outta sight. Great eats at a good price- now that’s a value we can all chow down. food nation

finchers1rgb500.jpgWelcome to the legendary Fincher’s Barbecue Restaurant. Established in 1935, our family has served your family for generations. Fincher’s is a family owned and operated establishment founded in Macon. Fincher’s is known for our award-winning Barbecue and our signature Barbecue sauce, it’s so well loved people come from all over the U.S. and the world to taste it. We think once you try it, you will love it.

What Others Say About Fincher’s...

  • I love this place. The people are so friendly, and they will talk to you as if they knew you for a long time. This is a great place! Mobile review by Sawyer in Urban Spoon 2/09
  • Do try the barbecue and ribs! Favorite choices are the plates of barbecue, ribs and chicken. Additional locations in town include some that are just carryout. Recommended by Southern Living’s “10 Best.”
  • Average BBQ and below average Brunswick stew in my opinion. You better check your order close because they get it wrong a lot. I do eat there from time to time because it is close, but it is not my favorite. I would rather eat at Georgia Bob’s BBQ!!! KeKeM in Yahoo Local! 3/08

 Georgia > Atlanta Metro> Restaurants > Barbecue

pigillustrationrgb500.jpgHere are the top 11 barbecue restaurants in Atlanta featured in a 2005 documentary by Atlanta Public Televisions that airs periodically on the station. (Dusty’s, the 12th restaurant included in the documentary, has since closed).

  • ANDERSON’S  The ramshackle cinder block building is hard to find on Willis Mill Road off MLK Jr. Dr. Looks more like back-roads Georgia than urban Atlanta.
  • DADDY D’Z Acclaimed barbecue. Central to downtown Atlanta in Historic Grant Park.
  • DEAN’S Dean’s 1947 roadside barbecue stand is the second oldest in Georgia. It has the only outside pit in the Atlanta area.
  • HAROLD’S Open more than a half-century ago, this local favorite on McDonough Boulevard in Atlanta is where those that love barbecue come to pay their respect. The cracklin’ cornbread is a specialty.
  • KC PIT The “KC” in the name is a specific reference to Kansas City and the tradition of barbecue that evolved there in the early 1900s. KC Pit owners, originally from Kansas City, relocated to Metro Atlanta and brought their special recipe with them.
  • ONE STAR RANCH Buckhead and Alpharetta locations have been serving bbq, ribs, and more for over 20 years. The Buckhead location, visited for the PBA documentary, is shown on the map.
  • SPRAYBERRY’S  A barbecue favorite of locals and celebrities, including country music star Alan Jackson, who once waited tables there, and the late humorist Lewis Grizzard. Operated by four generations of the same family since 1926. Two locations in Newnan. The Hwy. 29 location, visited for the PBA documentary, is shown on the map
  • PIG-N-CHICK Everything barbecue from ribs and barbecue pork to turkey and chicken wings. Two locations in Atlanta: Roswell Road and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. The Roswell location, featured in the PBA documentary, is shown on the map.
  • ROLLING BONES This a-typical barbecue restaurant with its modern, efficient environment, has recently partnered with Atlanta by Todd Richards. Named one of the Top 10 Barbecue Restaurants in American in the July 2009 issue of Bon Appetite Magazine, based on the food and style of the previous ownership and management organization.
  • THE SWALLOW  The Swallow at the Hollow is a Barbeque Restaurant/Country Music Venue where the philosophy is that “If you can make it homemade, you do make it homemade”.
  • WILLIAMSON BROTHERS Three locations in the Metro Atlanta area: Marietta, Canton and Douglasville. The Marietta location, visited for the PBA documentary, is shown on the map.

Augusta’s Sconyers

What Sconyers Says About Itself…
sconyersaugustargb500.jpgIn Augusta, Sconyers is the place for real, old fashioned, oak and hickory, pit-cooked BAR-B-QUE. When your taste buds yearn for the honest taste of old- fashioned bar-b-que, Sconyers has to be your choice. Succulent, tender ribs; lean mouth watering tenderloin and flavorful hash … all cooked to perfection from a secret family recipe. Beautiful surroundings, friendly atmosphere and courteous staff.

Barbecue is a Southern tradition. At Sconyers we’ve tried to continue to enrich that tradition by serving only the finest bar-b-que cooked by a recipe handed down through generations of my family. Join in the tradition with us by having bar-b-que at its best at Sconyers. You’ll always be welcome.

What Others Are Saying About Sconyers

  • Disappointed at this old favorite. Seems to be living off its past reputation. Opened limited days and has lost it’s appeal! GMG in Urban Spoon 2/28/09
  • You have to try this place at least once. One of a kind. Southern hospitality at it’s finest. A contributor to Trip Advisor, 2/09
  • The best bbq in Augusta, and the stuff of legends. Just walk in and see all the pictures from days gone by of Sconyer’s bbq & past Presidents. The bbq is always consistently amazing. My favorite thing is splitting the Plantation Platter with someone so I can have a little bit of everything: chicken, pulled pork, ribs, hash, rice. The hash is my favorite thing there, I could eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The atmosphere is great too: gravel parking lot, pond with catfish (have great memories feeding the catfish as a kid here), farm tools & paraphenalia on the walls, Southern hospitality from all the servers. Oh and sweet, sweet, sweet tea. This place is also great for groups, lots of room. And if you want take out, they have a drive thru. Just beware - they’re only open Thurs, Fri and Sat last I checked. So you only have 3 days to satisfy any bbq cravings! Corrie N, Atlanta, in Yelp! 9/08

Ultimate Barbecue

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

When it comes to Georgia barbecue, it’s hard to get a consensus of opinion, but haroldsbbqplate.jpgeveryone that I consider a qualified barbecue expert considers Harold’s on McDonough Boulevard near the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary to be among his or her top five choices for the “Best Barbecue Restaurant in Georgia.” It’s definitely on my top five list. Great pork, first-rate Brunswick stew, and wonderful cracklin’ cornbread, something that’s increasingly hard to find anywhere else.

The ambiance is everything you could hope for. An old, one-story brick building with terrible parking, small pine-paneled rooms with tables covered with red and white oil cloth, and straight-backed chairs crowded with pin-striped lawyers, secretaries and factory workers.

Learn more about Harold’s and find a map with driving directions on the Harold’s profile here on the BG site.
