Getting a Handle on Georgia’s Restaurants

Monday, May 4th, 2009

diningout-copy.jpgAs someone who has observed the development of Atlanta and Georgia restaurants over many years, I am fascinated by the burgeoning number of Atlanta restaurant bloggers. There are 20 on my blogroll, and I read all of them at least once a week.

Urban Spoon ranks 38 Atlanta restaurant and food bloggers based on the number of total visits to their blogs with Jennifer Zyman’s “Blissful Glutton” blog ranking number 1 with 18,185 visits to her 188 total posts and “The Traveling Gourmet Pig” ranking number 38 with 39 visits to his 1 post. Top Restaurant Bloggers

Friday, April 24th, 2009

bloggers1.gifUrban Spoon ranks 25 Atlanta restaurant bloggers based on the number of total views their blogs have received and also includes the number of posts to their blog. Blissful Glutton by Emory University grad Jennifer Zyman is tops in both categories with 18,408 views and 185 posts to her blog. Number of views range from the Blissful Glutton high to 37 for the Traveling Gourmet Pig.

Brand-new blogger “Tongue Sausage,” who I mistakenly referred to last week as “Tough Sausage,” is ranked a surprising ninth on the list with 3,780 visits to his blog even though he’s published only seven posts. (more…)

Tongue Sausage

Monday, April 20th, 2009

The new Atlanta food and restaurant blogger Tongue Sausage commented to say that he appreciated the plug on the BG website last week, but the name of the blog is “Tongue Sausage” and not “Tough Sausage,” and to clarify the bloggers gender – “I’m a dude.” Sorry, Tongue Sausage, on both accounts. Corrections have been made, and I’m following your blog with interest.

P.S. I’m thinking about an Atlanta food and restaurant blog named “Tough Sassage.”

bloggers2.jpgAt least 20 bloggers are discussing Atlanta and Georgia restaurants. Find them all here on the 1st Person: Georgia Restaurants blog. That makes 21.

Just when I thought I had all of the Atlanta and Georgia food blogs, along comes my Urban Spoon newsletter with a half-dozen more I’d never heard about including:
Chow Down Atlanta
Adventurous Tastes
Eat Buford Highway – that’s right, Eat Buford Highway
Eat Drink Man
Food Near Snellville – that’s right, Food Near Snellville – and
Atlanta Foodies

That’s 20 Atlanta and Georgia (mostly Atlanta) restaurant and food blogs on the 1st Person: Georgia Restaurants blogroll, and I’m checking them all at least once a week.

Am I missing anything?

Tongue Sausage

Monday, April 13th, 2009

bloggers3.jpg“Tongue Sausage” is a new Atlanta restaurant blogger who describes himself, as, “a young professional living in the Atlanta area. I have worked in pretty much all areas of the restaurant industry and have a passion/obsession for what they are all about: food, drink, service, ambiance. I still consider myself a novice foodie, and I still have a lot to learn myself.” Tongue Sausage is doing this in his spare time and has never considered himself a great writer. He intends the blog to be fun and hopes that people will learn something from it.

Main focus: Atlanta restaurants, including reviews, recipes, events and news. Recent restaurants visits by Tongue Sausage include FLIP Burger Boutique, Taqueria Del Sol, and Serpas True Food. Stay tuned to Tongue Sausage.

Blais Behind the Scenes

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

blais2rgb200.jpgColorful and controversial Atlanta chef Richard Blais (pronounced Blaze) writes about the thrills and frustrations of commanding a restaurant kitchen in Creative Loafing’s Omnivore blog. A recent post is called “Ponzu Scheme.” It’s fascinating reading for anyone interested in restaurants beyond what’s on the menu. Known for his high-profile appearance on “Top Chef” as well as for his creative culinary at Fishbone, BLAIS and One Midtown Kitchen, Blais has been blogging on the Omnivore blog since February 25, with four posts published so far. Let’s hope he keeps it up.

Bill Cutler’s Legacy

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

diningout-copy.jpgCliff Bostock, co-author of Creative Loafing’s “Omnivore” food blog, published a post last week recalling the groundbreaking restaurant criticism that Bill Cutler did for Brown’s Guide Magazine back in the 70s and 80s. Cliff pointed out that in the judgment of most food professionals who have been around long enough to remember, Bill was the first serious dining critic in Atlanta. He said, “It is hard to overstate how important he was to moving dining criticism out of the dark ages in our City.” I would add that the same comment holds true for all of Georgia.

Cutler was to dining out in Georgia what Rush Limbaugh is to American politics. (more…)

Table Talk

Monday, March 30th, 2009

restaurantillustrationrgb600.jpgA Georgia and Atlanta restaurant and food blog left off the list last week was “Table Talk” by Meridith Ford Goldman, the food writer at the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Recent topics include:

  • Shopping for cheese at Star Provisions, which she considers to be among the best cheese shops in the Southeast
  • A report on a visit to the Chocolate Bar in Decatur
  • And a two-part post on whether or not it’s okay for a restaurant to kick you out.

Table Talk is now on my 1st Person blog roll, and I’ll be a frequent visitor.

Georgia and (Mostly) Atlanta Restaurant Blogs

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

diningout-copy.jpgHere’s a summary of Georgia and (mostly) Atlanta restaurant and food blogs. Everybody sees it differently, and you’ll want to click through the list yourself to find a blogger or two that shares your tastes and point of view. George Bernard Shaw said, “There is no love sincerer than the love of food,” and here’s the proof.

Do you have a favorite Georgia restaurant or food blog that we’ve missed? I’d like to hear about it and pass it along to others.

AMY ON FOOD  Specializes in Atlanta restaurants, cooking and baking. Amy is an in-town foodie who earns her lunch money as an adoption attorney. She is enthusiastic about sharing her dining adventures with others who appreciate a good meal.

ATLANTA ETC.: WAYNE WOLF’S FOOD AND RESTAURANT BLOG is a food and restaurant blog about Atlanta’s food scene “with occasional forays into the world beyond.” Wayne is a professor at Georgia Tech in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and may be the world expert on lunchtime dining around the Georgia Tech and Emory Campuses. Recent posts include: West Egg Café, Bottoms Up and 5th Street Ribs ‘n Blues. Atlanta etc.: Wayne Wolf’s Food and Restaurant Blog.

BLISSFUL GLUTTON  Brazilian-born, Emory university graduate Jennifer Zyman’s blog includes reviews, plus news about food events and some recipes. Her food photos are close-up and appetizing, and she relies on those as much or more than she does on words to get across her ideas about the food and ambiance of a particular restaurant. She pretty much sticks to Atlanta restaurants and has a preference for the Asian restaurants in the Buford Highway corridor.

COVERED DISH is a dining blog from the editors of Atlanta Magazine. A good source of news about Atlanta restaurants.

FOOD AND MORE  Long-time Atlanta Journal-Constitution food writer John Kessler has added his voice to the chorus of Atlanta food bloggers. Kessler has been a writer at the AJC since 1997. For the first seven years, he worked as the paper’s dining critic. Currently, he writes the Sunday “Restaurant Stories” column, plus food feature and news stories in addition to his blog. Read this thoughtful writer’s “Food and More” reporting and musings on the Atlanta food scene.

FOODIEBUDDHA.COM covers metro Atlanta restaurants, chefs, food, cooking and happenings in the larger world of food with an insider’s eclectic, scatter-shot, gossipy tone. See his many tags for some idea of the range of the Buddha’s interests.

GEORGIA RESTAURANT ASSOCIATION BLOG. No restaurant reviews, but this new blog has the potential to be an interesting behind-the-scenes look at the Georgia restaurant industry.

OMNIVORE ATLANTA  is the food blog of the weekly free, at-one-time alternative newspaper, Creative Loafing. It’s dedicated to the discussion of food, restaurants and life, and the intersection of food and culture. Cliff Bostock and Besha Rodell use the blog to deliver thoughts and musings on the Atlanta scene, the national scene, and the role food plays in our lives.

SAVANNAHFOODIE.COM News and reviews about restaurants and food-related topics on the Coastal Georgia travel region.

STEAKHEAD’S  is an “Atlanta eats” blog by an anonymous blogger who characterizes himself as follows: “They say a Steakhead is a refined meathead. Well, maybe that’s not entirely me, but let’s just say you’ll have a better chance of seeing me if you are a season-ticket holder to the Thrashers or Falcons, than if you were a season-ticket holder to the Opera. But when it comes to food, I most definitely am Steakhead. I am not a refined food critic. I rarely eat French. I don’t do Fois Gras. I have had my last Vegan meal.” Heaven to Steakhead’s is a medium-rare, 10-oz. filet from the Chops Lobster Bar with a side of lobster tail.

UNOFFICIAL ATLANTA FOOD CRITIC  The sub-title of the blog is “The truth from someone who pays for their meals and not someone who gets fawned on regularly because they work for a magazine.”
