A Brief Intro to The Gunks

Located just 90 miles from New York City, the Shawangunk Mountains, or “The Gunks” is a world-class climbing and bouldering destination that attracts some 80,000 visitors a year. Experienced climbers agree that The Gunks is one of the best climbing locations in the eastern United States. Solid quartz conglomerate with horizontal (rather than vertical) cracks, The Gunks are the easternmost ridge of the Appalachians. Most of the Gunks is part of the Mohonk Preserve, a land trust that preserves and protects the northern Shawangunk Ridge. Climbers have access to more than five linear miles of cliff face with over 1,000 routes. Acres of accessible boulders provide a variety of bouldering challenges for all levels of skills. Parking and sanitary facilities are available. A daily fee is charged for access to The Gunks.
