I think that if you'll check further that you will find the Canoochee River is restricted from and below Highway 119 to the east side of the Fort Stewart Military Area by the government and they will not let it be navigated or fished by reason of it being used for training purposes and a firing range.

I don't know of any restrictions on power boats, but I wouldn't recommend it. Most places are too shallow - you will often scrape even in a canoe.

I work for the Hazardous Waste Management Branch of the Georgia Environmental Protection Division. I am investigating several sites in the South River watershed in East Point, and I need to document whether people fish and eat the fish they catch from uppermost portion of the South River, the South Fork of the South River, and the headwaters upstream of there. I would appreciate your assistance in finding someone who frequents that stretch of the watershed who may have observed fishing occurring.

Please respond to the following e-mail address: larry.papetti@dnr.state.ga.us

Thanks

On either the upper or lower Toccoa River, is powered boat operations allowed? There are certain boats built expressly for shallow water use, such as RiverPro boats. I would appreciate any information you can supply me with. I haven''t been able to find any rules or regulations about this...

Tres,
I can't give you any suggestions on your trip as I haven't been down the Flint in 30 years. I went down from Woolsey, Ga. to Montezuma, Ga. and I seem to remember taking a relaxing pace for a week when I was 17. We tried to put in at Fayetteville on Hwy 54 but had to port over 50%. Hitched a ride with a construction crew who hauled the canoes down to Woolsey (Woolsey Rd. crossing) where we "re-started";. Some beautiful scenery along the way and some nasty swamp areas also, which were enjoyable in the "roughing it" sense. Met quite a few locals along the way who helped with some minor problems, etc... 12 teenagers and 1 adult finally made it to Montezuma safely with only 1 broken arm mid-way (ie: the minor problem listed above!!). I found this site because I'm looking to do it again. Please let me know if your trip's successful as I want to try Summer 2010.

They are called painted rocks or marked rocks because of the petroglyphs carved into them. The Chattahoochee National Forest is filled with boulders carved with all types of symbols. That is why they are called marked/flowery rocks. The most famous are located at Track Rock Gap but they are not limited to this single location. They exist throughout the north Georgia area at the headwaters of the Chattahoochee. You can learn more at the following page of my website:

What's more interesting is that there appear to be Mayan glyphs on some of the stones. I've found the Mayan glyph for "star" on a boulder that appears to be a star map. Interestingly, the Mayans called stars "flowers" thus the translation of "flowery rocks" could mean "star rocks", i.e., rocks with stars carved on them.
