The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in northeastern Minnesota is one of the most visited wilderness areas in the United States. It has over 1,200 miles of canoe trails. A Brief Intro to Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness

Located in northeastern Minnesota the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness occupies the northern third of northeastern Minnesota. It covers over one million acres on its own. In addition, it is bordered by Canada’s Quetico Provincial Park for 150 miles on the north and is adjacent to Voyageurs National Park on the West. Altogether the region is a unique international outdoor destination. Formed by retreating glaciers, the BWCAW contains thousands of lakes and streams with rocky shores and sandy beaches. Within the Canoe Area Wilderness are over 1,200 of canoe routes, 12 hiking trails and over 2,000 campsites. Fishing is some of the best in the country. The BWCAW has the largest population of wolves in the lower 48 states. Other animals include black bears, moose, deer, beaver, bobcats, and eagles. The weather is unpredictable. Summers are short lasting from mid-June to mid-August. Rarely do summer temperature reach 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Average yearly temperature is from 29 to 36 degrees. The only transportation in the wilderness, other than canoes, are small float planes used primarily in emergency situations.
